"When the judges' sheets come in, after being arranged by the runner, the scrutineer checks their order to make sure that each judges' marks are going into the correct columns. Once the competition starts, the job is "really just non-stop," Rogers describes. The scrutineer loads the disk into his computer and he is then prepared to tabulate the marks from the judges' score sheets. The program's speed and accuracy allows scrutineers to work long hours without the help of others and with few, if any, breaks during sessions.Ī scrutineer's job starts at the beginning of a competition when he receives a disk that contains all the information on the event from the registrar. "This weekend, we have two qualified scrutineers so we can take turns and get breaks." Since the advent of current software programs, though, this is an unusual luxury.
